Australian director Rolf de Heer has been somewhat of an enigma over the past few years. It's been 3 years since he made Twelve Canoes and five years since his last feature film hit the big screen. Now he is back and reminds everybody just what a genius he is with The King Is Dead , a film that proves a simplistic storyline can still result in something special on the screen.
Max ( Dan Wyllie ) and Therese ( Bojana Novakovic ) are a young couple living the Australian dream-they have just bought a new house. On one side they have neighbors that are the perfect family, on the other side they have a run down home run by King ( Gary Waddell ) a simple man whom Max and Therese suspect is a drug addict.
Even worse than the constant drug deals is the noise that comes from the house every night. When King's friends Shrek ( Luke Ford ) and Escobar ( Anthony Hayes ) drop around (which is normally in the early hours of the morning) the house becomes the scene of a drunken and drug fuelled parties with loud music and girls screaming.
So far the neighborhood has done nothing, although there are rumors of a planned fire-bombing going around, so when Man and Therese see that the Police are going to do nothing about the problems they begin to wonder whether or not it is up to them to do something.
De Heer really hits the nail on the head with The King Is Dead . This is a situation that most people can identify with and for most of the film he keeps the storyline completely naturalistic making the film (and situation) seem even for identifiable for the audience as well as meaning that Max and Therese become so likeable that you certainly don't want to see anything happen to them.
De Heer also makes the dialogue sound so real that at homes you swear you are just watching hidden camera footage.
The naturalistic feel to the film however does mean that de Heer's introduction of comedy during the most intense scenes of the film is a little off putting. As a result the film's climax seems to lose a lot of its power and you can't help but wonder if it would have been more suspenseful if de Heer had made the scene much darker and dramatic.
With that scene aside though de Heer has done a wonderful job with The King Is Dead . It's hard to imagine a director creating as many great shots in what is basically a 'suburban drama', but de Heer manages to make The King Is Dead a truly beautiful film to look at.
The great script also allows for some wonderful acting performances. Dan Wyllie relishes on the naturalistic script and certainly seems to take a massive step-up in his career with his performance here- he even reveals some strong comedic talent. He is well supported by Bojana Novakovic who once again reminds everyone why she is one of the most talented Australian actresses on the scene at the moment.
Gary Waddell is another actor who steps up to the plate thanks to some wonderful direction by de Heer but not surprisingly he is largely overshadowed by Luke Ford and Anthony Hayes who get the characterization of their roles spot on perfect.
The King Is Dead is a wonderful drama film that benefits from some great scriptwriting on behalf of de Heer. A must see if you love Australian cinema.
